Spices were no more than a condiment. What made Venice fabulously rich was slave trade (12-16een cent.). High-profile slaves with languages (latin, greek,arab), blue-eyes blondes, such as Leonardo da Vinci's mother or Roxanne, Suleyman's favorite. Slave comes from Slave, from the Russian empire where all citizens were Tsar's slaves. High-profile slaves sold in Italy would become teachers for princes, that would, as rulers, support their activities.

Slaves had play a crucial role in Venise, as source of fabulous gains. They were specialized in literate slaves, speaking greek, latin an arab as a minimum. Those literate slaves (a roman heritage that survived Rome's destruction) played a first plan role in Italy: they were sold as preceptors of the princes, forming the mind of the future dirigeants. Venice's possessions in the East formed one of the roads of that slave trade, for example with the city of Azov (Ukrania).
