I am interested in quantifying and describing the social, cultural and economic importance of wild pigs and peccaries. The FAO estimates that more than 1.6 billion people depend to varying degrees on forests for their livelihoods, and that about 60 million indigenous people are almost wholly dependent on forests. How many of these people depend highly on hunting of pigs and peccaries? How would one find out? Could we develop rough estimates on a country by country basis? Any ideas are welcome.
