Under strong ground motion, the shear modulus G and damping ratio would obviously change during time sequence, which results in the variation of the dynamic property of the soil profile. Therefore, the commonly-used SHAKE may not work because it analyzes in frequency domain. Is there any way to drive the motion of base by the record of surface?
Nonlinear deconvolution is currently in use for processing of voice waves. However, the problem is much more complicated in the case of soil layers. A soil column is a kind of nonlinear time-variant filter with uncertain properties. Small variation in soil characteristic(say shear modulus) can result in significant distortion in amplitude and phase of the obtained base motion.
That's why, to my knowledge, all wave propagation software, SHAKE, DEEPSOIL, etc., do deconvolution in a linear manner which is only valid for very weak ground motions.
