Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact self-regulated learning by providing learners with personalized and adaptive tools that enhance their learning experiences. These AI systems can offer tailored content, explanations, and practice exercises, catering to individual learning styles and paces. By analyzing learners' interactions, performance data, and preferences, generative AI can generate relevant and challenging tasks that promote deeper understanding and critical thinking. Moreover, these AI tools can provide instant feedback and explanations, helping learners identify their strengths and areas for improvement, thereby fostering metacognition and self-awareness. Additionally, generative AI can simulate dialogue and discussion scenarios, offering learners opportunities to engage in meaningful interactions and collaborative learning even outside traditional classroom settings. However, it's important to note that while generative AI can enhance self-regulated learning, educators and learners should maintain a balance between technology use and human guidance to ensure the development of effective learning strategies and critical thinking skills.
personally, i am doing research on the impact of Ai on university students learning in general. and one of the things so far appears to me that Ai just magnifies the problem already exist for a long time which is: What the hell students are doing here? i believe that the answer to such a question will determine to some extent whether Ai will be used for good or not.
Ai can be very useful to develop students understanding of their topic. it can help provide a lot of useful feedback. however, the question becomes to what extent learning has to be easy while sustaining its efficiency. since i do believe struggling to be part of the learning process. In other words, accepting struggling and suffering is part of the message that learning should indirectly deliver to students. and here become the problem with Ai, which is abolishing these features of struggle. so students become lazy and less tolerant of challenges than they are already.
In my opinion, social problems shape the motivations of students. Their apparent lack of motivation to study hides the lack of appreciation for academic achievement in modern society. People in general terms are motivated to gain money and the academy is not in line with it. In this complex scenario, AI can considerably support students to finish the required academic stages and during this process, it could (crossing fingers) help them to discover an amazing world attractive enough to deep in.
