The idea is to determine if there are any differences in wound healing, bone formation and/or remodelling, if bone defects are prepared surgically, say for example one-wound per animal compared with two-wounds per animal, at pre-established healing time-points. Would bone-fill and maturation for "one-wound per animal" be any faster than "two-wounds per animal"?
Many years ago, we studied wound healing in an in vivo model. We followed skin repair from burns inflicted by scalding water to test the effects of vitamin C supplementation on wound healing in an animal model rendered deficient in vitamin C. The animals deprived of vitamin C had double the healing time of animals supplemented with vitamin C and demonstrated a deficiency in tyrosine metabolism and hence thyroid hormone output, a metabolic endpoint promoted by vitamin C.
