Maria Luiza Iennaco de Vasconcelos Sophisticated scans of the brain can correlate with reported mental images. But correlation between a scanned brain state and a mental image is not the same as identity. So apply abduction (i.e. inference to the best explanation) and/or Occam's Razor.

where should your own experience exist - if not in your mind? Where else? These destructive sagas have deceited you since you were a child - to the extent you cannot understand your questions. No - I am not mocking you - I blame your priests and teachers!
The answer is implicit in your question - please just try to interpret the words!
Arne Kjellman , I didn't mean to question if it is in the "mind" or elsewhere. I meant to question "the way you feel" it exists. Specifically, what I'm trying to elucidate is the hypothesis that these experiences might be ilusionary and not "a real thing in the brain".
Karl Pfeifer I've heard of this algorithm before. It's very interesting indeed. But still doesn't show us the "subjective experience" in those images. I think it is a matter of time until these algorithms are able to fully "spy" on your mental images, sounds and even full thoughts. However, I doubt it will ever be able to show us "subjective experience" the way people understand it now.
"a real thing in the brain". Since we do not know what "real", "thing" or " brain" stands for - science is unable to answer your question. Anyhow, you know YOUR ANSWER - "I FEEL INSIDE" - so you can LEARN TO ACT GUIDED BY YOUR FEELING - but never explain it! For science to do it - we have to start from the very beginning ... for the beginning of living life. This is the prize to pay for developping the bad habit of lying. There is for sure no short cut to take - and this is the very disaster classical philospohy faces - but loudly refuses to admit!
Maybe an old paper of mine (below) can help you a bit on the new way?
please stop using the word "brain." It stands for a physcial entity (inclusion) - not an abstract one! "Mind" - or the "society of minds" is the consistent denomination
Don't try to drag me into the quagmire! "there is no such thing as nothing" is a piece of 'word magics' that demonstrate the inconsistency of epistemology. And the sad situation classical philosophy make use of such a tool - simply turning its discourse into sophism.
NIL is an idea with no sensible counterpart in the spoken languages.
You are a computer scientist with a brand new Doctorate in Engineering - why do you think as a philosopher from around the birth of Christ? You fool yourself as most "natural-language-users!" The natural languages have not been developed by scientists!
Agree: "The idea behind the language is useful." Its implementation a total disaster that has ended up in millennias of war ... and nuclear weapons that probably can wipe out the sun system. And a deathly terrified humanity in total chaos.
So - I humbly ask you to try to OPEN UP! Stop to philosophize - it is mostly a mean to boost you ego and waste your life. Do something useful !
