I am performing a Wear experiment using Pin on Disc wear trial. But I want to know the wear rate; without measuring the weight loss. Can it possible to calculate the wear rate from the wear debris. Is there any correlation available for it. Please help ...!

As far as I know that wear rate is calculated as the specific wear rate (Wsp), which is given by
Wsp=V/LD mm3/N-m
where V, L and D are the total wear volume, normal load and the total sliding distance, respectively.

Dear P reddy, how will you calculate the volume,V, without calculating the mass loss. From wear debris, can we calculate the wear rate, without calculating the mass loss.
If the wear is uniform on the pin, you can calculate the wear volume by measuring the difference in the height of the pin (if it is the material being tested) before and after the test.
I recommend Vijay Kumar, You can calculate by difference in height of the pin for particular sliding distance, if the wear is uniform or else one more method is
You can use a commonly used equation to compute the wear rate (Archard,1953).

where F is the normal load, s the sliding distance, Vi the wear volume and ki the specific wear rate coefficient. Index i is for surface considered.

If you use a fixed ball at the end of a pin, you can determine worn volume as a volume of a spherical cap which was removed during the test. All you have to do is to measure the diameter of the spherical cap. When it comes to the flat sample (disc), use a surface profiler and create profiles at several locations along the generated wear track. From created profiles you can determine average area of the cross-section of the wear track. Then, by multiplying the area with the length of the wear track you will obtain worn volume. The other possibility is to measure the width of the wear track and to determine its volume as a volume of a horizontal cylindrical segment. The second method is less precise.

A minor addition to substantial previous answer. In case of viscoelastic or viscoplastic material under testing, some error of volume wear calculation from wear debris takes place.
I think this is an in an inappropriate way to conduct a standard research.
