The adsorption is inversely proportional to size of the particle, i.e. with increase in size of particle the adsorption decreases. The finer the particles size of an activated carbon, the better the access to the surface area and the faster the rate of the adsorption kinetics.
Surface area can be measured by BET methods other methods available are porosimetry , the Nobel method is achieve by T. Bartels – Rausch and M. Ammann (PSI) for measuring low specific area. According to AWWA, 1967 in general, coarser particle size distribution will permit higher hydraulic loading and back wash rate but will have lower adsorptive rates.
