In my research, to reduce cost of predictive maintenance I am using critical part of a machine or a critical machine from a system consisting of M machines as a leading indicator for predicting overall maintenance time of a machine/system. Please suggest me some method or model for measuring criticality.

Let me try to answer your question
suppose a machine is intended to perform a Function F, the criticality of a part could be measured by analysing how the particular part affecting the function F, I.e Remove the Part and see whether the machine is delivering standard functioning.You can model the criticality and degree of criticality.

"IF THAT PARTICULAR MACHINE IS NOT FUNCTIONING (BREAKDOWN), THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION WILL COME TO A HALT.".
For example, in a process oriented manufacturing firm, the FIRST PROCESS MACHINE is the critical machine. If the first process machine is not working, the rest of the process will come to a stand still.
If any machine or part or system can be by- passed and can be operated, then it is not considered as CRITICAL.
Using this understanding, you need to IDENTIFY in a pool of machines, which are CRITICAL and WHICH ARE NOT.
That will help you to design a PREVENTIVE MAINTENACE PROGRAM practically based on CRITICALITY FACTOR.

In terms of mechanical items, from maintenance & reliability point of view criticality should be considered based on these-
1. Effect of its non functioning leading to total plant shutdown, or particular line shutdown or some portion of total process shutdown etc
2. Effect on safety- human safety, product quality safety etc
Also, one can include Safety to environment as well.
Criticality of systems and subsystems is commonly a part of the management system in UK nuclear systems. The classification of systems and subsystems can be taken right down to component level and is based on the potential of a structure or process to impact a need, expectation or aspiration of a stakeholder. The impact can be on any aspect of performance, product/service quality, safety, health, environment, financial/commercial, reputation etc. It all boils down to the purpose of a component or process and the implication(s) if it dysfunctions or totally fails. Another aspect is whether there is redundancy or backup systems built into the design. While the reliability of a component is internal, its criticality is dependent on external factors including its purpose, how it is used and the importance to stakeholders needs, expectations and aspirations.
