A very tricky question indeed.

I guess there is a formation of thin film of BN/Polymer composite on the surface of Cu.

The film acts as a non-corrosive coating on its surface, thus protects the further deterioration.

The interaction must be a kind of pi-interactions between the metal and the BN acting as a ligand. This needs to be established by measuring the wavelengths.
