The main topic I am working on is the relation between orogenic collapse and rifting triggering, especially on the area of the passive margin of the South china Sea in Hong Kong.

My actual topic is the study of the thrusted contact between the Tai Mo

Shan Formation and the Pat Sin Leng Formation.

Previous studies have shown the presence of a large low-angle thrust fault

zone running w-e direction thrusting the Tai Mo Formation (Jurassic) onto

the Pat Sin Leng formation (lower-cretaceous). This thrust have to be

post-lower-cretaceous, since he affect the Pat Sin Leng Formation.

Related to this structure a shear zone, with sheared pebbles can be found.

There is two possible causes for this structure, or it is due to a

compressive context (conventional thrust) or to an extensional context

(orogenic collapse).

In order to understand this structure I will conduct a kinematic and

structural study of the area, and especially the extent of the shear zone.

This will provide us intensity and direction of strain.

It is also necessary to get some datation in order to determine timing of

deformation.

The first approach is then a fieldwork, where I will observe and measure

the structures, especially lineation and foliation (C-S structures if any)

in order to determine the kinematic and the mechanism of the event

related. I am getting data about the lineation, foliation and pebble orientation.

But the problem is I do not know yet how I could do the difference between a "conventional " thrust (compression) or an "orogenic collapse" thrust (extension). In addition I d not know how to date this event.

Feel free to ask me more details about this topic.
