How can we determined the type of energy band gap to be measured i.e direct or indirect energy band gap?

In literature related to glass some authors determined the direct gap and some determined the indirect gap. Now if i want to measured the band gap for my glass samples how can I determined the type of band gap either we should go for direct or indirect?
