The roots of wheat and rice crops are known to produce organic solvents in micronutrient deficient soils to bring the micronutrients in the solution form in the rhizosphere facilitating nutrient uptake by crop roots. Can we determine the amount of phytosiderophores produced in the rhizosphere?
Phytosiderophores produced by barley, wheat and rice are secrected in a diurnal fashion probably to avoid bacterial degradation. The secretin of these phytosiderophores can be measured when plants are grown in hydroponic culture. In soils it is not easy to collect and measure the secretion. The other possibility is to check the amount of phytosiderphores within plant body.
