How are the quality and relevance of distance education and online learning experiences and their outcomes measured for the purpose of quality assurance in the higher education context? Are there ways and means to measure them at the individual, institutional and systemic levels? Can I get some key indicators of quality and relevance?
Great questions. I know at our institution, I am working the innovative learning and technology committee on ensuring that our blended and online learning is pedagogically strong. This at times means that we are helping faculty to "flip" their classrooms and assisting them in developing online lectures and hands-on classroom activities. At other times, this means using nearpod (https://nearpod.com) or video diaries to support distance learning. Overall though, it appears that so far we are using similar indicators for quality as we would for on campus teaching, assessments of student learning and course student feedback are highly important in both scenarios. Another measure is to "observe graduates" from a certain major, college, university. It is difficult metric to obtain but a robust metric.
