IR spectra will give u a rough idea about an unknown compound , CHECK ur IR spectra with standard one or the IR values with the values given in the IR table
First you need to index all the IR spectrum peaks from your sample. A standard library of various molecular vibrational frequencies (IR) is required , for example, carbon-oxygen molecules, carbon-carbon molecules, carbon-hydrogen, hydorgen-oxygen, and other organic bonds for search and match.
The question is too general to give a concise answer. However, for quick analysis you need to make fingerprint comparisons with data bases, and make allowance for other effects which cause shifts in bands.
For in depth analysis, you may need to use group theoretical techniques for complete assignment of all bands. Group theory gives you excellent understanding and analysis.
For in depth analysis, you may need to do measurement for gas phase spectra. Shapes of band and their peaks give excellent information about the system.
For more complete analysis, you may need to use Raman Scattering Spectra (which in many cases complement FTIR spectra).
