It depends strongly on your available analytical equipment, the number of samples, time for analysis and the cost. Besides measurinf dissolved organic C and N concentrations, most simple indicators of the composition are probably obtaining UV-visible absorbance spectra and measuring Abs at 254 nm as a measure or aromatic content and SUVA; in addition, relatively simple and effective method is obtaining excitation-emission matrices of fluorescence which are typically (but not necessarily) are analyzed by parallel gactor analysis. In this way, one may obtain the concentration-related signals of major fluorescent components, including, at least, tryptophan- and tyrosine-containing substances and humic-like compounds.
