This enables the creation of sophisticated systems, like biosensors that detect specific molecules and respond with a programmed output.

From simple to sophisticated function

By combining genetic circuits, synthetic biology can program organisms to carry out sophisticated functions that far exceed the capabilities of traditionally engineered organisms.

• Metabolic engineering: Instead of simply inserting a single gene for a desired product, synthetic biology can construct entire artificial metabolic pathways by combining enzymes from different organisms. A notable example is the engineering of yeast to produce the antimalarial drug artemisinin.
• Smart therapeutics: Researchers have engineered bacteria that can invade and selectively destroy tumors. This is achieved by programming the bacteria to sense the unique, low-oxygen environment of a tumor and then release a toxic payload.

• Increased precision: Next-generation genome editing tools like CRISPR-Cas systems provide synthetic biologists with greater control and precision. In addition to cutting DNA, nuclease-deficient CRISPR molecules can be used to regulate gene expression without modifying the genome sequence.
• Systemic understanding: The bottom-up assembly of biological systems forces a deeper understanding of how individual components interact to produce complex, emergent behaviors. This approach drives new scientific paradigms that are not as easily discovered through traditional analytical methods.
