With increasing concerns about the global warming and its effects, researchers and academic professionals can guide others into novel ways of preserving the environment.
That can be as simple as suggesting to your colleagues and co-workers to turn off their computers or lights upon leaving their workplace, to other novel ideas to promote environmental issues.

Researchers around the globe can influence policies, formulation of laws and implementation of laws, for not to throwing plastic on oceans, to save oceans' living beings.

Oceans and islands are not our trash bins, it is serious, as innocent living beings are adversly affected by it directly, and human beings are adversly affected by themselves through their own irrosponsible behavior of throwing plastics on banks of oceans and into oceans.
It is important for all academician and educational leaders to create an awareness among students about the role of conducive and safe environment for sustaining life on the planet earth.Children must be taught from the beginning to build an understanding about the acts that can damage or enhance the environment.There should be monthly self review presented by each student in front class fellows and teachers about his or her contribution for safeguarding environment .

I do it by reduing the waste myself- less printing, do not use plastic bags, turn off the lights when not needed etc. I really want to buy an elctric car- but right now they are very expensive and not affordable.
I wish we as humanity can take some major steps like- using renewable sources of energy and cut down the Co2 emiision. planting more trees will help for sure.

US and Japan Refuse to Sign G7 Pact Against Plastic Pollution

The G7 summit ended up being particularly tumultuous this past weekend,intensifying disputes between the US and its closest allies and turning what is usually a staid diplomatic event into a battleground for national interests.
Members were unable to even agree on a pact about plastic pollution at the summit held in La Malbaie, Quebec, in Canada on June 7 and 8, according to the Globe and Mail.

What happens to the plastic bags?

The plastic soup
In the ocean, the plastic is broken down to tiny pieces. These pieces are eaten by fish and cannot be digested. Consequently the plastic builds up and enter into the food chain.
Hundreds of species are affected

" North East of Hawaii, the ocean currents form a giant whirl pool of debris from around the Pacific, the scientific name is called the North Pacific Gyre. It's one of the largest ecosystems on Earth, comprising of millions of square kilometres. Today it's better known as "The Great Garbage Patch," an area the size of Queensland, Australia where there is approximately one million tonnes of plastic spread throughout the ocean. Drag a net in any area of this part of the ocean and you will pick up toxic, discarded plastic.

I had been studying for quite a while the phenomenon called the Pacific garbage patch. I was looking for a way to visualize it, it was really surreal to land on Midway, seeing that my worst hopes of what I would find there are true. These are all albatross chicks, hatched out of their eggs and the very first meal they got was deadly to them. What happens is, when the eggs hatch one of the parents goes out and flies looking for food. They search over this vast area of the pacific and when they come back with is a belly full of toxic plastics, and they feed that to their babies. They die of starvation, malnutrition and chocking. Simply allow yourself to feel whatever it is you feel about this, without jumping to the way to solve it. Because I think we really need to feel these things, even if the feelings are uncomfortable, because those are the feelings that will turn into the fuel and drive passionate action - Chris Jordan

Very interesting question. Researchers and academic professionals should work far more from their research findings recommendation on paper in to action through community empowerment about preserving their environment.
Again, when the researcher is a role model in 3R: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, that would guide others as well.

I will post some of the issues that are easy to do and can help the environment:
Electricity: turn off the AC, lights and computer when leaving the office
Paper: reduce paper waste , try to move to paperless office, advice colleagues not to print any document unless really needed
Water supply for the office: use refillable water containers rather than the disposable ones.
Colleagues and students: share some of the environmental protection techniques and encourage them to make it a new habit in their own career.
Plants: adopt a plant at your office or plant a tree outdoors if possible
