Sanctuary months, before the Bedouins in Arabian Peninsula messed the up by stopping the Semitic practice of reconciling solar and lunar calendars, coincided with the reproduction cycles of the flora and fauna and thus protected plant and animal species. The prohibitions against burning live plants and of killing baby animals any time are Islamic practices that help solve environmental challenges. Islam requires that collective needs override individual desires and that solves a long list of societal problems. The prohibition of greed and selfishness are very effective in solving societal problems. No govermnt in the world currently adhers to the above principles.
I don't know about "particular statements" made by Muslim ethics, but it seems to me that a case could be made for promoting the kind of intellectual curiosity and open-mindedness that was emblematic of the Golden Age of Islam. If the Golden Age was indeed something that Muslims are and should be proud of, then it must have embodied something that was ethical. A scientific renaissance within Islamic culture can contribute to solving social and environmental challenges and should be an ethical imperative for Muslims.
@Eberhard Weber : The main issue is to reduce any kind of consumption when all the marketing and advertisements are pushing people to consume more by linking happiness to comfort and pleasures. It works because it fits our human nature that is always searching for pleasures and comfort ( in Arabic: El Tabr or human instinct). However the teaching of Islam is that the believer has duties (in Arabic: Taklif) which are exactly the opposite to our instincts. Some examples: (1) Enjoying food is human nature but God ask us for fasting (Ramadan) which is the opposite. (2) Human nature is to love money and the duty is to give charity. (3) Human nature is to enjoy sex with partners but the duty is to get married and be responsible for the family. The Creator promised Paradise for those who have good heart and fight patiently their instincts.
Muslims can do this by showing the true image of Islam as a religion of tolerance and love for others and changing the image others view of Islam caused by terrorists far removed from the teachings and concepts of the Islamic religion. The new image can reach non-Muslim religions and peoples through good deeds, not just through the media.
Thank you very much for the contributions. Next week here in Fiji a conference starts on Sustainable Alternatives for Poverty Reductions and Ecological Justice. Objectives are to discuss social and environmental ethics in an interfaith dialogue.
Muslim ethics can contribute effectively in solving social problem if they are implemented through Sufi orders. There are many cases but I just want to share one that is " The Rise and Role of Naqsyabandi Sufi Order in Singapore" unpublished Master thesis. available on line with pdf form.
The Muslim who did not hurt people with his hand and tongue. A Muslim who accepts everything from God.
You X accept from God all things (poverty, deprivation ...), you do not hurt people with your hand and not your tongue = You are a Muslim. A Muslim does not harm the animal or trees = does not harm nature. A Muslim is a brother to every Muslim, helping him to have a balance in society.
That is a really exciting debate. I am just think is I should have a live webcast of the conference next week. I will put the link here if I can realize it.
Nobody in the Arabian Peninsula nor its inlet tribes with flags has the right to speak for Islam nor for Muslims. Prophet Muhammad said:" Islam started as a foreigner and will come back a foreigner as it started"
The Quraan states: “ QaltelAArabu aamanna qul lam tuaminu walakin qulu Aslamna walmma yadkhullil imanu fi qulubikum”. And NEVER will. True forever and hence true today
