I am interested in empirical studies and theoretical reflections on upgrade of informal housing areas and possible gentrification processes. If the assumption is correct that squatter settlements are usually built on land nobody wants to use then things might change, if upgrades provide better environmental conditions. This then could mean that the upgrade initially meant to improve conditions for the existing population benefits others, namely those who manage to crowd out the initial population. I am also interested to learn how this process of replacement works in detail……..
