I believe there is no specific method to rule out such a bias. The ideal is to think well in your control groups and thus avoid false positives.

You could use the Sucrose Preference Test which measures anhedonia (reduced ability to feel pleasure) in rats. There are several advantages to use this test: not affected by strength/weakness of animals, done in home cage, can be repeated overtime.
