Is there a way to use multivariate techniques (ordination and classification) to help tell apart species using data on descriptions of species? The problem is that descriptions of species provide ranges for size of each character and the number of individuals measured (N) is either variable or more often it is unknown. I am afraid that calculating mean values from ranges with different or unknown N values would not be fair, but I do not know any other alternative. Another problem is that, ocasionally, the measurement of one carácter (i.e. leaves ) comes from some individuals) and the data for flowers or fruits comes from different individuals. Is there a way out to be able to use this techniques with data from species descriptions?
