Recently I am working on co-simulation between Fluent and third-party software (Abaqus/Standard in this case). I am trying to use UDF in Fluent, as well as CSE in Abaqus. Does anyone know whether it is possible to call a user defined c++ function in a UDF macro (e.g. DEFINE_ON_DEMAND) to transfer data between the two? Also, is it feasible to make a running Fluent job suspend until required data transfered back from extern c++ function?

I believe there are many ways to achieve what you are trying to do -- link two disparate systems.
I have done using a high level language than C++. But you can do it using C++ as well. It may take greater efforts if there are no or little APIs available to process the interface or UDF data.
I have used CATIA V5 UDFs extensively so my answer relates to that.
But the process remains very similar in linking the two systems. May be this may be of some use to you? So find the link attached.

Excel-VBA could help you in this matter. I have used it to drive GAMBIT, FLUENT and Optimization algorithm in automated design cycle with no user interrupts. Similarly it is possible to automate, at software level, any experimental data acquisition.
You should note that from UDFs, other programs cannot be called as they are internal to FLUENT. Instead try using SCHEME programming in fluent which is similar to C or C++.
