I am doing experiment on Compression ignition engine so for the lubricating oil analysis i need to see the metal debris in Lubricating oil after a particular time so is there is any method to see these debris.
and also i have try to see the debris by baking the oil so that the volatile materiel in oil can be reduced although after that i can see the metal debris in compound microscope at the magnification of 200 X but there is so many carbon particles are there so i cant able to differentiated between different metals which are present in oil. can any one suggest what are the steps to see the image clearly or how to remove the carbon particles from sample so that i can differentiate the different metals present in oil.
One of the approaches may be preparing a sample for SEM or TEM by dispersing a drop of used oil with wear debris on a conducting substrate usng alcohol or acetone and then drying it. Also it may be useful to secure the particles by sputtering a carbon film over them.
Marine lubricants samples, as standard, are frequently sent for laboratory analysis. As far as I know the spectrographic analysis us used there. Depends on equipment of your laboratory and/or your budget it can be a good Idea to use the same method or to send for commercial analysis to any of the major oil suppliers.
If you just need to identify the debris in the sample oil to identify the particles composition and morphology, the following could be a possibly easy methodology.
1- Use centrifuging to settle down the debris.
2- Reduce the centrifuged oil from the top of the sample.
3- Add acetone to the residue.
4- Re-centrifuge repeatedly so the settled residue is cleaned enough for the following microscopy and spectroscopy to identify the required information.
Note: The centrifuging process parameters – time, speed, temperature … - could be extremely effective in the process’s efficiency, so please be patient and run some trials first.
