There is special product in vat dyes which is already chlorine fast. Is there anyway to that I can apply as finishing to improve chlorine fastness of vat dyes. I am looking for solution which is passive to chlorine or that can create protective layer against it.
I doubt if such a protective agent exists. The problem is the colour loss is due to chemical reactions which actively destroy the colour generating chromophore molecules. Fortunately there are several commercially available ranges of chlorine resistant vat dyes with a good light fastness and range of hues. These are mainly synthesised using Pyranthrone or Isoviolanthrone chromophores.
To avoid the loss of colour on textiles when using chlorine products, it is necessary to control the pH of the washing bath as well as its temperature. On the other hand, the fibre of the textile also has an important role, with cotton it is possible to reduce colour damage with an alkaline pH of 9 to 9.5. For wool or polyester, it doesn't work. There are bleaching agents specially dedicated on coloured linen and delicate fibres.
The only way to avoid the loss of colour is to neutralise the chlorine action on the textile at the end of the bath. Simply with a lot of water or with ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate, sodium sulfite or sodium bisulfite.
Swimming suit producers such as Speedo have a new range of fiber which are more chlorine resistant (Speedo endurance +), but at the end you only delay the endlife time of the fabric.
Chlorine resistence/fastness improvers for cellulosics and polyamides are now available. It improves pool water fastness.Refer to Dyefix CF from LNCI and similar products from other manufacturers.
