Use Matlab / R toolbox for extraction.

MATLAB provides both high- and low-level access to NetCDF files:

eg.

output = ncread(ncFileName, variableName) % high level function (available after Matlab R2012)

I work in R2013a also but on a Mac. Attached is a script that might help you. Let me know if you have further questions.

ncid1 = netcdf.open('3B42.20110108.00.7.SUB.nc','NC_NOWRITE'); %to open your file 

Data = ncread('3B42.20110108.00.7.SUB.nc','pcp'); to get your data from worspace

ncdisp('filename') % displays all the groups, dimensions, variables and attributes

ncread('filename' , 'variable') % reads data from the intereset variable
