I received some data from Statistics South Africa in an SXV4 format (SuperCROSS) and would like to open it in SPSS (or a similar programme if need be). I have tried opening it with Excel and the Notepad app but neither gives me legible data. My plan was to open it all in SuperCROSS and then try to export it but I can only add a limited amount of data (the dataset is very big) and I also have to add it in a crosstabulation format which makes it more complicated. Any ideas? This file format is very obscure but that's the only one they provide.

SuperCROSS, on their website, list a number of export formats for the data. "Export results to a number of open and standard formats, including CSV, Excel and HTML."
I suggest that you contact the data people and ask for a CSV or Excel export. If they won't do it, I would question whether you actually have a research partnership in the first place.
