Hi Daniel, most software packages that support latent variable modelling don't really care about whether your DV is observed or latent. But if Smart-PLS only allows observed DVs then I don't think this is going to be a problem because maybe you should consider moving to a observed variable model anyway. At the minute you have three LVs with quite a few indicators for each of them. You'll need to to model the 'main effects' and 3 2-way interactions and one 3-way interaction. Phew, that'll be some latent variable model. Alternatively you could fit a CFA for all the LVs together and save the factor scores. You could then use the factor scores (and their products to represent the interactions) in a regression model. This would be simpler.

Regarding the CFA for all LVs, if I run all together, won't I run the risk of losing the specificity of each LV? My intention is to understand the direct, indirect and total effects of each LV.

Hi Daniel, my apologies, I thought you were interested in moderation rather than mediation. This makes things a bit easier. Can you just set species richness up as a latent variable in Smart-PLS as a latent variable with a factor loading of 1 and error variance at 0. This is then a directly observed variable pretending to be latent.
