I mix calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and sodium sulfate in solution and during the reaction I take samples to measure their concentration variations. the initial concentrations of calcium is 2003 sulphate is 4803 magnesium is 1215ppm would you please guide me about the questions below:
1- what is the highest concentration that IC can measure?
2- the initial pH of the mixed solutions is around 6 should I acidify the aliquots?
3- if my initial concentrators are high by what factor should I dilute them?
Ion chromatography requires different columns for cations and anions. You must have calibration standards and depending on the sensitivity of the columns and the detectors, you can (may be) measure up to 1000 mg/L without dilution. The dilution factor also depends on the sensitivity of the columns and the detector. As a rule of thumb dilute by 10 first and then by 100 and then by 1000.
Just out of curiosity, why did you choose ion chromatography as a technique for your work. I would have chosen ICP-OES and analysed for Ca, Mg and S taking care to inset operational standards, internal standards and replicates for the analysis. This technique is fast , effiicent and very sensitive; and can be automated to run overnight with your results waiting for you the next morning.
