For the next step in my master thesis research, I would like to map the microfractures in my sample using ArcGIS.
Available Data: A micrograph of the sample under REM (BSE Mode). The contrast was set in a way that the fractures are easy to see. (Black lines over white grains)
Goal of the study: To calculate the number of fractures (approx.) and to construct a map of the space orientation of the fractures in order to get an indication of their source.
There seems to be no tutorials or literature discussing this method on the forums and discussion boards on the internet. So I hope I find my answer here.

If you just want to use ArcGIS and no other software: try to use an edge detection filter first, convert the resulting raster to vector lines, calculate the length for each line and apply an attribute query like a fracture has to have at least the length of 10 times the width of an original pixel.
Sounds a problem that must be analysed with a specific petrogrphic or microscopy program like imageJ. It also seems you need learn something about texture image analysis.
