Mindfulness practice allows us to see things clearly as they are and with practice to accept things as they are. This doesn't mean that we are giving up or being defeated in any way. It is simply allowing for reality to be as it is and live life from there.
For example, if I had chronic pain from an accident and I struggled, resisted and fought against it with my negative thoughts and, emotions and by hating my body, it would only increase my suffering. I would waste all that life energy fighting against what I could not change. In contrast, I could accept "reality" and use my energy to lovingly care for myself and my body, and expand my awareness to my entire life by practicing mindfulness and meditation. My awareness is not in pain; it is bigger than that. I can observe my habitual patterns of reactions to my pain as a witness and know that it does not define me.
Shinzen Young Quote below sums up how much suffering is increased by resisting what we cannot change. By accepting things as they are, we relate to difficulties in a different way and then they can be transformed.
"Suffering = Pain x Resistance"
