My ongoing task is to count the number of small and large squares, separately. My prospective memory task is to have participants respond with a different key press when they encounter a green square.
How can I make it harder for participants to identify PM targets (green squares) in this task?

If color of square is the PM cue, how many different square colors (regardless of size) are participants presented during the ongoing task? My first thought was to parameterize amount of different square colors. For example, an 'easy' ongoing task might include only 4 different square colors whereas a 'hard' ongoing task might include 16 different square colors. Not sure how this plays into your overall research goal, so just a thought. Good luck, Brandon!

Thanks, Drew! There are 6 colors (not including the green target squares). I think that you are right. Maybe, the task would be harder with more possible colors, particularly colors that are similar to green.

you can offer diferent paradigma with condition. I try diferent type of event-based PM:
interactive: if the examiner does not answer the subject must do it (the subject should check that the Psicologist gives the answer)
Conditional: only responds if the green square is preceded by a red
sequential: if the green square is followed by a other green square
change the answer: reply to the square via the button in a condition x and verbally in a other condition (such as when the square is preceded by a white square)
you can increase a component of "time based" PM: response to a green square with a response x in the first minute by a verbal response in the next 3 minutes with the button and a double tuch response in the following 3 minute.... in this task the subjet should monitor the course of time
