The amount of loss in fertilizer from agricultural soil depends on soil type (porosity - pH number - cation exchange capacity ....), plant type, amount of fertilizer added (whether it is more than plant requirement or less) Type of fertilizer added - Type of shipments ....). The critical factor is the amount of water added and the method of addition (irrigation system)
The relationship between water, soil, and nutrients
Water carries nutrients to surface water systems in (1) overland flow (runoff), (2) unsaturated flow (inter-flow), and (3) groundwater flow (base flow). Overland flow is the most direct route for water transportation. Underground flow is less direct because the water flow is impeded by soil permeability and porosity constraints.
