I recently found this freshwater crab in the river and known as Potamon sp., but currently i do not have the manual book for identifying the crustacean until its species. Can someone recommend me a book to read?
Yes, there are several books available for identifying freshwater crabs. Here are a few recommendations:
"Freshwater Crabs and Shrimps of Sri Lanka" by S.A. Abeyratne and R.W.K. Punchihewa. This book covers the freshwater crabs and shrimps found in Sri Lanka, but the identification keys and descriptions could be applicable to other regions as well.
"Freshwater Crayfish of the World" by J. Fetzner Jr. This book provides identification keys and descriptions for the freshwater crayfish species found around the world, including many species of freshwater crabs.
"A Guide to Freshwater Crabs and Shrimps of Singapore" by D. P. Lim and P. K. L. Ng. This book is specific to the freshwater crabs and shrimps found in Singapore, but it may still be useful for identifying Potamon species found in other regions.
"Freshwater Invertebrates of the Malaysian Region" by P. K. L. Ng, R. S. K. Barnes, and L. H. S. Lim. This book provides identification keys and descriptions for a wide range of freshwater invertebrates found in the Malaysian region, including freshwater crabs.
These are just a few examples, and there are many more books and resources available depending on your specific region and research interests.
Attached are two references that are freely available on-line. Both should be helpful. Please let us know the species once it is determined. I am interested!
Interesting. Can you please add some more pictures? Similar to Potamon sp.
But, looks like Eriochier Japonica which is known invasive species. Do you have a previous record of this in your region? Close-up pictures can throw some light.
Thank you for the recommendations, Ahmad Al Khraisat . Fortunately, the region contained in the books that you recommend, is close enough to the region where this crab was found. Thank you.
Also, thank you for the references you gave to me, @Tom Trott. My team can only identified this freshwater crab until its genus (Potamon sp.). But later, when I found this crab again, we will try to identify till the species.
Unfortunately, I only have one other photo of this freshwater crab, and it's not the close-up version @Renjith VishnuRadhan.
