I am trying to synthesize TiO2 nano arrays on ceramic substrates using hydrothermal method.
I did obtain a layer of nano arrays on ceramic substrates, but XRD results only shows the peaks of the substrates, and no peaks for TiO2 were found. No lattice were found in HRTEM images.
After annealing at 500C for 2hr, peaks for anatase TiO2 appeared, and the peaks for the substrate remained intact.
I am assuming the product to be amorphous TiO2, but I think it is not convincing enough. It can be other complex titanium compounds.
So I want to know what technique should I use to identify the product is before annealing.

Did you do ATR-FTIR studies. It can provide some idea of the newly formed compound.

You could try grazing incidence XRD to pick up just the surface layer, rather than the substrate.
