Dear all

I am modeling in CST software for a simulation, which consists of two horn corrugated antennas (one as transmitter. another one as receiver )and one sample in between the antennas, to monitor the S-parameter of the EM waves simulation.

To validate the simulation, I would like to adjust the material of the sample as "PEC" at first, hope d to get S11 as constant 1 in this case, however, the S11 is always between 0.9 and 1, no matter how fine the mesh is. Then I tried to ajust the material of the sample as "normal" (the epsilon = 1), still, there are some waves reflected since S11 is not 0.

I use Time domain solver and some of the important parameters are:

1. Boundary : Open for six faces

2. Background: Normal (epsilon = 1)

3. Mesh: 3 per wavelength

4. Frequency: Around 45-50GHz

Potential reasons I can think about so far are:

1. The waveguide ports I put is rectangular while the cross sections of antennas are circular, the margin of the ports are thus ouside the area of antennas, some waves transmit through out the open boundary and never reflected to or received by antennas.

2. The mesh is not fine enough.

I am a student from Civil Engineering without systematic study about EM waves, some of the terminologies could be difficult for me to understand, could you please explain in a detailed way?

Thank you very much!
