I want analysis the textile wastewater by GC-MS. How can I extract organic compounds from wastewater? Some literature gave dichloromethane extraction but it didn't include procedures.
you could do classical extraction by just adding solvent, shaking it for a defined time and then doing a clean-up procedure before measurements. Otherwise, you could also do an accelerated solvent extraction (ASE).
Attached find an example of extracting phytotoxic, organic compounds from sewage sludge wastewater by using different solvents and an easy extraction method.
I think ASE will be the best opportunity as it is really reliable and easy to use. I also used it for some of my studies about olive mill wastewater in soils! If you need some further information on ASE, let me know.
Since waste water contains lot of suspeneded solids. So first check from the literature the adsorption capacity of your desired compounds. you can do ultrasonication followed by filtration or filtration alone alongwith analysis of retained suspeneded particles. A series of steps required are:
Liquid Liquid Extraction, concentration, cleanup and further concentration
I think that the best way is to use SPE (solid phase extraction). However you need to found the proper SPE cartridge (with the proper filling) to the organics that you want to extract. With SPE you will extract and at same time concentrate your sample.
There are two types of possible extractions before GC/MS. Solid phase extraction (spe) or liquid-liquid.
For the liquid-liquid extraction, you should first remove the suspended materials by filtration (0.45 µm) than extract (liquid-liquid) in three steps : first with n-pentane, second with dichloromethane, third after acidification to pH2 (by HCl 1N) also with dichloromethane.
The acids can be derivatized by the addition of diazomethane before the GC/MS analysis.
