Working with some colleagues about soil respiration, I need to estimate soil temperature, having not any direct measurement available but only meteorological data with daily maximum and minimum air temperature. Does anyone know a method - a pedofunction, a model - to estimate soil temperature from air temperature data?

Hello Chiara,
to my opinion, this can become difficult. The soil heat flux (which determines how fast temperature is passed into deeper soil layers) is dependent on soil texture and soil moisture (which both are correlated). Furthermore the type of soil surface cover (e.g. bare soil vs. mosses) affects the thermal exchange between air and soil as well as it by its albedo determines how much solar radiation reaches deeoer soil layers. So many unknowns and if you have possibilities I would recommend using some thermologgers. Good luck

Soil temperature is impacted by many factors. The appropriate way to obtain such information exactly is to record them while monitoring. But unfortunately, it's not available for you to have the data. So to make up such loss, there are more data you need to simulate the scenario, eg. soil moisture, vegetation cover, soil depeth, sampling time, mechanic composition of the soil, the thickness of water layer if ponded, etc.. I just want to warn you, the simulated results only could be used as a reference. Please do it holistcally next time. Best wishes.
