I’m trying to estimate narrow sense heritability (h2) of some traits using offspring-parent regression. For general traits, we have to plot mid-parent values against average offspring values and then estimate h2 from the slope of the regression line.

I wonder how to estimate h2 if those interesting traits are secondary sexual traits, for example horn of rhinoceros beetles which is presented only in males. I cannot use mid-parent values because females lack horn. Can I estimate h2 from the slope by plotting between father values against average son values directly?

Thank you
