From your question, it appears that it refers to atmospheric air cooling of a hot medium in the tubes. Are you looking for airside fouling or tube side fouling? (TEMA refers to tube side.) If it is tube side fouling, then the tube layout details (staggered etc.) are irrelevant. One needs to know more about the composition of the liquid in the tubes, the possible contaminants and their concentration, as well as the temperature. If you are concerned about air side fouling, it is unlikely to be a serious problem unless it is very dusty air (unlikely). The deposits will not be tenacious and the removal mechanism is shear-controlled. Thus it is likely to be blown off easily. Periodic cleaning with a pressurized jet of water will solve the problem and no fouling factor calculation is necessary.

I should have clarified that I have been looking for the air side cooling. We are planning working on a project in Saudi Arabia. Thus, the fouling factor is in our point of interest.  

You mentioned about periodic cleaning with water, however in some research papers, cleaning with water is not recommended due to the corrosion possibility. 

What do you think about it?

Hi Erol, How deep is your tube bank? Water jet has more power to blow off the soft deposits of dust. You could use pressurized air jets too. If it is a boiler plant, you could use the high pressure saturated steam from the boiler itself instead of providing a separate air compressor that will be used for only a fraction of the time.

On reduction of pressure in the nozzle, the steam jet will be hot, superheated and will leave no moisture on the tubes. Besides, I think in the rather dry air of Saudi, any wetted surface will dry quite fast and I do not expect corrosion (rusting) to be an issue. But of course you need to consider the local conditions to decide what suits you best.

It will not be easy to quantify the air-side fouling resistance in your particular environment without performing experiments. I would suggest that you check your heat exchanger's sensitivity to gas side fouling. (Since the gas side heat transfer coefficient is low and tubeside coefficient is (presumably) much higher, some fouling can be accepted. However, this may be counteracted by the surface area extension ratio due to the fins, as this will infuence the total gas-side resistance. Finally, the fin efficiency will be (positively) affected by gas side fouling.) Next, assess whether the acceptable fouling resistance threshold will represent a likely deposit layer thickness (e.g. by assuming thermal conduction through a uniform deposit having the same thermal conductivity as air). If the thickness is significant (in the mm range), pressure drop will most likely be affected, and some surface cleaning method applied, if the shear stress of the airflow is not sufficient to remove the deposit. Otherwise, you will need some cleaning strategy based due to the thermal esistance buildup (or, alternatively, overdesign your air coolers.)

There will be an experiment to obtain the relevant heat transfer coefficients but it won't be in the "particular environment". However, we will try to imitate the environment. My work actually will be to simulate the system through thermal hydraulic codes. I will make sure that you and all of you have commented will receive a digital copy of the validation paper.
