Through phytoplankton bloom the secondary productivity that fin fish culture and shell fish culture can be increased. Iron fertilozation of ponds can increase the phytoplankton productivity.
Priority areas where substantive increases in water productivity are possible include: (i) areas where poverty is high and water productivity is low, (ii) areas of physical water scarcity where competition for water is high, (iii) areas with little water resources development where high returns from a little extra water use can make a big difference, and (iv) areas of water-driven ecosystem degradation, such as falling groundwater tables, and river desiccation.
That is what I know about the water, I don't know about the shrimp. Sorry, I hope I was useful.
Water productivity is based on plankton productivity as well as microbial based productivity (ie auto tropic and hetero tropic. The shrimp species cultured in the semintensive systems are mostly detritivores. Hence, microbial based productivity enhancement is now a days followed in some parts of Tamil Nadu. As primary production based systems are highly unstable and possible alteration of water quality (particularly pH) , the microbial based system help to enhance the productivity. The microbial based detrital production system helps to reduce the feeding level and remove the NH3 toxicity which is mainly pH dependent.
what to do is to Minimize unnecessary water exchange/ replenishment and taking full advantage of the compensatory growth response, also perceived as a way to increase water productivity and profits in aquaculture operations.
