I want to ‘mark’ e coli cells in a safe an effective way.  By safe I mean, I’d rather not have to add something foreign to the environment or alter genes. I need to mark e coli, then have the marked cells travel through the gut of a scavenger, and then be able to identify those marked cells in scavenger feces.  I think I could alter parts of the RNA to mark e coli, but is there any simpler way?  For example, could I inject food coloring into e coli and would that be likely to make its way through the digestive system of a scavenger?   I don’t mind if the idea is experimental, I just need to find something that could potentially work.

Please excuse my lack of understanding as I’m an ecologist and know little about the world of microbiology.
