I am to make a solution of Sodium Nitrate and a polymer which is hydrophobic. I have been trying with ethanol, but in vain. Please suggest me a procedure to make a solution of sodium nitrate.
I am assuming you are looking to dissolve both sodium nitrate and a non-polar polymer in the same solution.
Most solvents that will dissolve sodium nitrate will be polar in nature and will probably struggle to solubilise your polymer. DMSO and a few others may be worth looking at but I suspect you will need some kind of solvent blend - at a guess possibly involving an alcohol and an alkylbenzene like o-Xylene. However, the exact composition will depend on your polymer's solubility also. You may have to compromise with low concentration.
Finally, worth bearing in mind that polymers - particularly long chain variants - can take time to dissolve and can be aided through heat and sonication.
I remember that I dissolved silver nitrate using acetonitrile before. So I recommend acetonitrile for a trial, but I'm not sure if it is compatible with your polymer.
