Wishing you success on your Ph.D programme. Of recent, I've taken interest in slum upgrading in Nigerian cities, only to realise how high-handed and repressive most state governments in the country have been.
UN Habitat (2003) describes a slum state as "a contiguous settlement where the inhabitants are characterized as having inadequate housing and basic services." There are in fact many indicators of slum condition, and they generally border, among others, on: access to improved water and sanitation; housing quality; sufficient living space; and tenure security. Evidently, aspatial aspects of slum conditions, which are by no means trivial, are usually not captured by remote sensing images. However, those spatial aspects like poor housing qualities and inadequate access roads are easily decipherable. Relative to the resolution of the satellite image, the irregular and discontinous patterns of slum areas (informal settlements) could easily be distinguished from regular and continuous patterns of formal residential areas. Any experienced cartographer or remote sensing technician will be of great help.

Try calculating the standard deviation of blue, green, and red wavebands on a per-pixel basis. In ERDAS Imagine this function is called "Stack Standard Deviation." I have generated this in portions of Accra using high-resolution satellite images (e.g., 2 m) and it seemed to provide higher values in slum areas. You might want to run a focal mean (3x3 window) to smooth the result a little.
Only a high-resolution imagery would be of help to some extent.
It also depends on your definition of slums and what indices you are looking out for their identification.
