How can I define the eigenstates of a continuum operator?

I want to consider the interaction between an atom and a continuum field. But I need to determine the eigenstates of the mentioned field in order to solve the Schrodinger equation.

Which means you have to consider for example the electro magnetic field as a series of oscillators and then use them in your equation
