I am currently simulating a slug flow in the 3D, 3 inches pipe geometry as prescribed in the attached research paper. I am using Ansys Fluent.
The problem is, when I get results, I observe that I can not generate slug at the same superficial liquid and gas velocities as his. The reason is, he used a UDF to create sinusoidal perturbation at the inlet by defining variable liquid level (Equation 7 in paper). My supervisor suggests to do the same without using UDF. Previous students has done that without UDF but somehow their data is not available to me.
I would really appreciate if you could help or suggest me what should I do to create sinusoidal wave perturbation without UDF.

In ANSYS CFX this is possible via CCL expressions for the air and water volume fraction depending in a sinusoidal manner on space coordinates and using these expressions for flow initialization.
Eventually this is possible in the meanwhile with the newly introduced (i.e. cloned from CFX approach) expressions in ANSYS Fluent 2020.R2 as well, but I'm not 100% sure since not yet tested by myself. If this works in equivalent on how it would work in CFX, than writing UDF could be avoided.

Emil Smyk thats wonderful to know that ANSYS 19 allows for mathematically expressing the boundary conditions. obviously in the example you mentioned, its a time dependant boundary condition. Is it also possible to express a space dependent boundary condition (independant of time) mathematically. something like Vo=0.5(1-0.2x)
