MT3DMS is used in conjunction with MODFLOW in a two step flow and transport simulation. Heads and cell-by-cell flux terms are computed by MODFLOW during the flow simulation and are written to a specially formatted HFF file (referenced by the LMT file).
MT3DMS uses HFF file for contaminant transport simulation.
Suppose I have velocity field obtained analytically or by some other means. How I can use the velocity information directly for contaminant transport simulation using MT3DMS? I don't want to use/execute MODFLOW.
Do I need to make a similar HFF file? How Can I do this?
You must generate the formatted file in the required format. It is best to use an interpreted computer language such as MATLAB, OCTAVE or Python.
Bear in mind that only the velocity field is required to run the solute transport model (i.e. MT3DMS). So, the groundwater heads could take any dummy value.
Though I did not try it, you may look at the FloPy project because of file parsers and generators for MODFLOW/MT3DMS using python should already be there freeing you from reinventing the wheel.
