In case you have several .txt files to convert, then you might have to consider the for loop as given below.
Set your working directory to the location of your .txt files, and make sure that the folder contains only the target (.txt) files.

The following methods using Excel may be simpler options if you intend to feed the dataset to other applications than R.
Change .txt file extension to .csv
The easiest way to convert a TXT file to a CSV is by saving the TXT file with a .csv file extension.
After saving the file as .csv, the text is put into columns in the spreadsheet.
Import TXT data into CSV
An alternative to changing the file extension from .txt to .csv is to import the data from the TXT file.
In Excel, go to Data > From Text.
Locate and select your TXT file.
Select Import.
Select Delimited and Next (as the file is delimited by commas).
Check Comma and select Next. This will add lines to show you where the column breaks will be.
Select Finish (unless you want to change some of the other formatting, but in most cases this won't be necessary).
Select OK (unless you have another place you want the data to appear).
Convert TXT data into columns
If your TXT file has data fixed in 1 column, use these steps to convert it.
Select the fields the data is in.
Go to Data > Text to Columns.
Select Delimited and Next.@
Check Comma (unless the data is delimited by one of the other options) and select Next.
Select Finish (unless there are other formatting options you want to apply).
@Frederick, yea that's right but the challenge will come up if you're dealing with 1000+ files or if you want conversion within a loop.
Truely Denis, within the R platform, your code is adequate. However, I always dread manipulating data within the R environment. I wish i can get help to create a composite dataset from feature files generated from hard drive image using Bulk_Extractor.
The use of Excel is by no means, simpler. I only appreciate the more feasible prospect of making the product(file) available for other Data Mining applications.
A macro or JScript to work with Excel, can be written to accomplish some task. Basically, the script uses Excel to open all of the files and convert each worksheet of each XLS file to a CSV.
