Is there any quick method to know, if the isolated phytochemical is novel or already known? The structure of the compound was already identified using NMR spectra and EI-MS spectra.
SciFinder (scifinder.cas.org) would be your best alternative. Draw your proposed structure for the compound and/or conduct name based searches. If you're at a university/an institute, you might have access to SciFinder. If not, it'll be tricker to access SciFinder as it requires payment/subscription for access.
Furthermore, now you are talking about isolation only, but remember to consider the possibility that your compound could have been synthesized previously. To search for synthesized compounds (in addition to SciFinder), you can use Reaxys, Chemspider, Chemical Abstracts, ChemExper, Organic Syntheses, PubChem or patents online....just to name a few. Some of them are free online whereas some require payment.
Last but not least: I said "proposed" structure. NMR and EI-MS characterizations are great tools, but try to attempt all possible characterization methods you can think of to make sure it's the right structure. If it's a chiral organic molecule, do you have the correct absolute configuration at the stereo centre(s)? Today, structure revisions are rather common for natural products.
@Jan-Erik and @Mehmet thank you for your helpful answers
but in fact my my university has no access for SciFinder
and regarding to the possibility of the synthesis of the compound, we will take it into consideration but first in case of natural products we just need to make sure if this compound has not been reported before.
Hi, consult the first chapter of the Second volume of "handbook of marine natural products" http://www.springer.com/life+sciences/biochemistry+%26+biophysics/book/978-90-481-3833-3
you can check in sciencefinder website whereas you can draw the structure of your compound that you believe is new compound. so you will search chemical structure
