I'd like to have some know how on how I can characterize the particles surface. In particular I'm try to embed YSZ powder with a shell made of the same materials and prepared through sol-gel chemistry. There are easy ways to determine if something changes on the particles surface?

I would recommend making zetapotential measurements. Especially in case coatings on zirconia with subsequent heat treatment processes you may completely change the surface chemistry. Even in case of commercially available monoclinic powders of different origin you can find adverse tendencies in surface charge depending on the powder manufacturing route.

If you are trying to analyze the surfaces I would say TEM and environmental SEM techniques might be useful. If you would like to know about the change in chemical structure of the surface of the particles, FT-IR and reverse GC might help.

The easiest way is to analyse particle surface charge using a zeta-potential measurement. But be careful of the pH at which you measure, you want to be well away from the point of zero charge of the YSZ (ie. not a pH of 6-9, either quite acidic pH 5 or basic ph 10 - but watch chemical degradation) so as to gain maximum sensitivity for differences in charge.
an alternative is SEM analysis with EDX - energy dispersive x-ray as it will allow you to do elemental mapping of the surface of you particle. XRF offers more diversity in surface elemental/functional group analysis .... but it is rather complicated.

the best way is to carry out depth profile with XPS, which will give you specific surface sensitive chemical composition and electronic properties of over layer.
